PCOS and how practicing mindfulness has benefits

 

Mindfulness is paying attention to whatever is happening whether it is your body or surroundings. It is learning to notice things without judging if it should or should not be. For example, if it is 40 degrees and June, you just simply acknowledge it is cold and that maybe you should grab a sweater, instead of, “I can’t believe it is 40 degrees in June. It should be way warmer than this!” Mindfulness keeps you present and efficient to stay on task.

Women with PCOS have a hard time sensing hunger and fullness cues because their bodies are not regulating hormones efficiently and those that are insulin resistant will have major cravings especially around the beginning of their period. With the help of mindfulness, stress, cortisol levels, anxiety, and depression may decrease.

Mindfulness Exercises:

Mindful Breathing:

  • Practice increasing the length of inhales and exhales

  • Notice the feeling of a deep breath in

  • Pause before the exhale

  • Notice the sensation you feel after
